Since I’ve been working on the plot outline for House In Exile, I’ve been thinking about what are going be some of the major plot elements. And one of those plot elements is my main character getting involved in a relationship.
Now, both previous books in the House Valerius series haven’t really dwelt on romantic and/or sexual relationships much, so writing about this will be kind of new territory for me. Plus, given the character history (unless I retcon anything), this is going to be Ash’s first real adult relationship. Which means, as far as he’s concerned, it’s going to be fairly intense. So I’m probably going to (be trying to) write some sex scenes.
Without any real track record in writing this, I’m a little worried about doing a good job of it. On the other hand, since it is an integral part of of the plot line, I don’t want to sidestep it either. Not only would that be taking the easier, less challenging path, it also seems like it would be doing the story a disservice.
The next question would be, assuming I don’t avoid those scenes, how explicit do I make them? I mean, I want to try and capture that notion of a consuming passion, the early days when there seems to be little else but want. That’s what I picture happening but I also don’t want to over balance things.
Since I’m expecting book 3 to be partially, if not completely, written in the first person, maybe it will be easier to make Ash’s state of mine explainable without having to go too far into explicit territory. Other (better) writers have obviously done that, so it is doable.
Argh, I have the feeling I’m making less sense than normal. Maybe it’s because I’m not sure what I want. Maybe time will tell.
I’ve been having the same problem. I don’t really write erotica or anything anywhere near close to it. Really, this is my first attempt at a romance period. Basically, I’ve been spending a lot of times reading to see how other authors succeed at writing sex scenes. Hopefully, I’ll then be able to do the same.

I’ve had a couple of suggestions that might prove useful. The one in the comment by awshannonauthor and this: https://janefriedman.com/write-love-scene/

Sex scenes are tough. It’s hard to find the right words to portray the emotional aspects involved without getting too explicit. The more I do it, the easier it gets. Good luck.

I usually draw from Eric Jerome Dickey for ideas. He writes in many different genres, but any story he tells usually has sex scenes that are pretty intense.

I am really loving the theme/design of your web site. Do you ever run into any browser compatibility problems? A few of my blog readers have complained about my website not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Chrome. Do you have any tips to help fix this issue?
